Expanding Access to Energy: A Project for Europe

April 12-15, 2018

About the Project:

Participants will examine U.S. efforts to promote international cooperation to develop and expand the availability of diverse traditional and alternative sources of energy. They will learn how U.S. energy policy is shaped and meet some of the players involved, including private industry, non-profit organizations, state and local governments, and citizen activist groups. Participants will examine traditional sources as well as the most cutting-edge alternatives under development to mitigate the effects of climate change. In addition to meetings with a range of traditional energy producers, the project will include site visits to observe and discuss initiatives to create centers of economic activity around green technology and products in computer technology, agriculture, green building, green nanotechnology, energy usage, and electric mobility. This project is designed for environmental leaders, government officials, policymakers, academics, journalists, and energy experts.

Project Context:

The European Union contains some of the “greenest” and most innovative countries in the world in terms of energy policy and infrastructure development. This is seemingly at odds with the current energy policy being implemented in the United States. However, there are still myriad alternative and green energy initiatives moving forward in the United States today. International cooperation in this space is more important than ever, with the global environmental crisis worsening exponentially, year over year.
