Participants from the Palestinian Territories, who work in conjunction with the Israeli Defense Force, will be coming to Northeast Florida in early April to examine best practices for diplomatic security. They will explore best practices for diplomatic security for court rooms, special events, and diplomatic visits. They will also examine crisis training for security units and U.S. practices for teaching this type of training.
The participants will hold meetings with the Institute of Police Technology and Management at the University of North Florida, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, and the FSCJ Law Enforcement Academy.
For 14 years, Israel and the Palestine Authority have had a mutual understanding in regards to security coordination. The Israel Defense Force works in conjunction with the Palestine Authority to ensure the region remains stabilized. They both have the common goal of quelling Hamas and work to stop small incidents from snowballing into large-scale events. In fact, the security agreement has stood the test of time because it mutually benefits each group.
The election of PA President Mahmoud Abbas in 2004-2005 began the cooperation between Israel and the PA. The security cooperation has worked in each groups interest over the years. There have been many instances where Israeli civilians and soldiers have become caught up in Palestinian mobs and riots, and been saved by the Palestinian Authority. Additionally, the PA objects to organized armed violence against Israeli's due to the heavy toll Palestinians pay in these skirmishes.
While the region still faces many problems and conflict between the two groups remains, the security coordination is a step in the right direction.
