Domestic violence is experienced by about 71% of women in Africa, and 51% reported that domestic abuse is justified. A recent report in Hareetz points out that in the Gulf states there is almost no reporting of violence against women due to the disgrace it brings to the accuser and her family . Jacksonville was one of the early leaders in the women’s movement and in developing services to address gender violence. There are about 4,600 domestic violence cases per year in Duval County alone, and about six to ten people lose their lives to domestic violence in Jacksonville. Because of this, Jacksonville is home to many organizations that educate the community and work hard to prevent the problem from growing. Safe houses, legal assistance and counseling are available throughout the city. The Jacksonville community knows that educating both men and women on domestic violence is critical as it affects the community as a whole.
Delegates from Algeria, Chad, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia will visit Jacksonville to gain insights into the ways local organizations work alongside the community and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to combat domestic abuses and violence. Meetings will include the Hubbard House, the Jacksonville Sheriff 's Office, and key community influencers.
