CDiplomacyCitizen Diplomacy: Engaging our Community in International Relations

Until recently most people probably thought of foreign dignitaries, embassies, ambassadors, and receptions at the State Department when they thought of the United States' diplomacy efforts. Since the Wiki-leaks release of thousands of State Department Cables, most probably think of buxom Ukrainian nurses and how uncreative Angela Merkel is. But members of IVCJax think of diplomacy differently.

When we hear of diplomacy we think of individual Americans building professional and personal relationships that span the globe. We think of greeting international visitors with a smile when they arrive. We think of sharing professional information that improves careers and communities. We think of inviting strangers into our homes to share an evening meal. We understand that the relationships we are forming have a lasting impact on how we view the world and how our visitors view the U.S. which ultimately effects U.S. foreign policy.

When a group of Indian Journalists came to Jacksonville this past December they were greeted by members of the Indo-US Chamber and invited to participate in a series of roundtable discussions with Young Professionals comparing Indian media and culture with that of the U.S. They met with reporters at the Florida Times Union and FolioWeekly, spoke with blogger Nick Callahan, and met with Cheryl Brown and Jeff Clements about how Florida Sunshine laws affect media. They were also invited to the home of Raj and Holly Goswami, an Indian-American family, for dinner that turned into 12 am coffee because the conversation was so good. Their experiences with our volunteers led one visitor to say, "Jacksonville, A wonderful town for international visitors where all cultures blend", while another said, "I will always remember meeting the half Indian and half American family. How both of them have integrated in each other's culture".

Citizen Diplomacy is not a new effort. In fact, the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program has been going strong for 70 years, and while our national diplomacy efforts may have a little mud on the face for now, we can take pride that America is also represented by a host of excellent citizen diplomats who consistently represent their country admirably. Thanks to all our members and volunteers. May our joint efforts continue to win hearts and minds throughout 2011.
