Newly Elected President of Moldova has Ties to Northeast Florida

Moldova, an eastern European country, elected Nicolae Timofti its president March 16, 2012, after nearly three years without a leader. This occurred nearly seven years to the day after his 2005 visit to Jacksonville, Florida, hosted by GlobalJax. At the time, he was an Appellate Court Judge participating in the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program exploring how we fight judicial corruption here in the United States.

My Visit to America

It all started one day, when I got a call from the American Embassy asking me if I want to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). I was happy to be selected among the others from different Arabic countries to take part in such a program. The program aimed to share the American experience in water resources with potential candidates from different countries in the world. It covers different topics such as water management, surface and groundwater usage and protection; irrigation, water sanitation; conservation, and convergence of public private partnerships in water stewardship.
