World Relief - Jacksonville

Category: Business  Tax Status: Non-profit

The Mission of World Relief, as originated within the National Association of Evangelicals, is to work with, for and from the Church to relieve human suffering, poverty and hunger worldwide in the name of Jesus Christ. In the fourteenth most populated city in America, World Relief and partner Christina churches are bringing new hope to refugee families. Many refugees arrive in Florida with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing when they step off the plane. They face the daunting prospect of rebuilding their broken lives in a 'strange' new land where they know no one. World Relief and partners welcome new arrivals and make them feel at home in Jacksonville. We provide vital assistance during the 'early days' after a family's arrival - helping them find accommodation, employment and adjust to American life.

Solace for the Children

Category: Cultural, Health  Tax Status: Non-profit

Solace For The Children is a 501(c)3 organization of volunteers that provides medical and dental care to needy children. We do this primarily through a summer hosting program in which children from Afghanistan come to the United States and stay with American families during the summer for six weeks while they receive treatment. The cost of bringing the children here is covered by sponsoring churches or other groups in the area. The local medical community donates their services to treat these special children. As you might imagine, hosting one of these children is a life-changing experience, but the effects reach beyond individual homes. Friendships develop between Afghan children of differing ethnic backgrounds, host families of differing denominations, Afghans and Americans, and local Christian and Muslim volunteers. Solace For The Children believes that these relationships are the beginning of a foundation for lasting peace between Americans and Afghans, one person at a time. Acting on that belief, we are taking steps to grow from a local non-profit to a national humanitarian group, serving many more children.

Category: Education, Health, Community Services  Tax Status: Non-profit

Our vision is a world in which all communities have the capacity to meet their basic human needs.

Engineers Without Borders – USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while fostering responsible leadership.

In January 2009, two Engineers Without Borders – USA chapters were founded in Jacksonville – the Jacksonville Professionals Chapter and the University of North Florida Student Chapter. Over the last 12 months, both of these organizations have flourished through leadership, projects and fundraising.

The Jacksonville Professionals Chapter’s Kick-Off meeting in January 2009 attracted nearly 70 interested attendees, many of whom went on to become founding members of the chapter. The first Executive Board of the Jacksonville Professionals Chapter was formed in March 2009 and worked to build the membership and recognition of the organization. They organized several meetings with presentations about potential projects, and formed sub-committees for marketing, fundraising and projects. A new Executive Board was elected in December 2009 and will lead the chapter through December 2010.
