Global Tuesday Social Draws Big Crowd, Great Conversation
With 18 visitors from Algeria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, India, Iraq, Israel, Maldives, Mexico, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Republic of South Sudan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe there was something for every one of the nearly seventy current and future GlobalJax members in attendance at Tuesday’s Global social event at the University Club.
After a warm welcome from the event’s sponsor, the University Club, our featured guests introduced themselves by name and country while those in attendance made lists of who to speak with first.
Ms. Charity Timothy, a Regional Secretary General from the newly formed Republic of South Sudan spoke to many about the challenges and exciting opportunities of forming a new government structure. “We want to lay a strong foundation for the future of our country,” she said. Though children are going to school and basic services are operational, Charity acknowledged there is still a lot of uncertainty and chaos. Armed with all she has learned in Jacksonville and will continue to learn during the rest of her U.S. tour, Charity will return to South Sudan to help build a strong foundation for the nation’s future.
For Mr. Mohamed Elfeky, a professor of comparative law at the University of Alexandria in Egypt, the conversation continually drifted towards the recent revolution. He spoke of his decision to head to Tahrir square, a several hour train ride from his home, to participate with his students in the protests. He described his time the square as peaceful demonstrations that could not be quieted by occasional instances of flying tear gas and erratic vans charging protestors as they prayed. He cautiously and optimistically expressed a sense of great hope for the future of Egypt and encouraged us to visit Alexandria in the near future.
As a tourism expert, Mr. Yehiel Bar, was more than happy to talk about travelling in Israel. For GlobalJax Intern, Rebecca Schlang who plans to travel to Israel this summer Mr. Barr was an invaluable contact who promised to be a friendly face from the moment she arrives and even arrange a tour of the major sites.
Other discussions included the recent exit of American troops from Iraq, traditional clothing in Nimibia and Mexico, travelling in Turkey along with general government structures in the Philippines and Bhutan. Pictures from the event can be found on our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/GlobalJax.
